Finding peace and happiness in your own home is an important part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. When we come home the goal is to unwind, relax and reset for the next day to tackle the obstacles in life. A lot of us also do work at home, like cooking, cleaning, maybe even more work, but often or not a lot of us come home, eat dinner and watch TV or stare at our computers. Then later on we feel guilty about not fully utilizing our times. This is something I hear often from friends. “I meant to do ‘this or that’ the other night, but instead I just watched TV.” or “I’m just too tired to do that…”

Well my friends, I do this too and I do feel guilty, but we shouldn’t feel guilty, because we all do need to clonk out sometimes and watch our favorite series on netflix (Mine is The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). But, we also feed our minds sometimes with more, and that comes in the form of creating mindfulness in the home.

So, you may be asking what are some things we can do? Well these are a few things that have worked for me.

  1. Yoga/workout – Yoga and/or working out is something very few people actually enjoy, but nearly 100% of people say they feel more energized and overall happier after doing it. There are so many workout videos on YouTube for all fitness levels. It doesn’t have to be long. My regular workout is only 15 minutes! Don’t believe me about the energy read one of my favorite articles from the NY Times.
  2. Meditation – Don’t feel like working out, but want that same relaxed feeling? Light some candles (essential oil candles are the best) try meditating to calming mindfulness music. You can find playlists on Spotify and on YouTube, just try typing in “mindfulness” or “calming” music.
  3. Reading while drinking your favorite beverage – It may seem silly, but the combo will help you stay attentive and focused.
  4. Pets – Spend time with your pet for a while. Walk your dog, brush your cat! They’ll be happy and it will take your mind away for a bit. Don’t have a pet? Watch funny pet videos. OR… if you are able you should consider adopting a cat or dog from your local pet adoption center.
  5. Clean your room/place while listening to happy/calm music – Seems silly, but it’s not. It’s also something that needs to be done. Having a clean space also helps with anxiety and stress.
  6. Journaling – While journaling isn’t for everyone it is a good way to keep the mind active and reflect. You don’t have to write a lot, some journals are list based. Example: “I am thankful for these things today” or “Things that happened today.” You can type the entries in your computer or go out a buy a journal that matches your personality.

No matter what you do though it’s important that you focus on the positive energies. Remind yourself of these things creating peace, having compassion and not letting obstacles get in your way.

There are so many resources out there. It is definitely hard to feel motivated at first, but once you get a routine going, you’ll be that much more focused and ready to take on any challenge that comes your way.
